Get ready to be a little more confused about a new way to get website addresses.ICANN has already revealed the companies and organizations that applied for the new generic top-level-domains (TLDs). These TLDs, also called new extensions or nominees, range from .apple and .book to .google, .lol, .music, and beyond. They are definitely going to change how we use URL in our browsers.
New extensions will change Internet forever
Since 2006, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Named and Numbers has been leading the process to expand the domain name system in order to create more competitionon the Internet dominated by the .com, .net, .org, and so on.The result for users is that we are soon going to enter URLs far differentfrom the standard .com, .org, .frand .url.
Rod Beckstrom who is CEO of ICANN, admitted “It’s a historic day for the Internet. The internet is about to change forever.” This is the first time, that brands and even individuals will have their own TLDs, also known as “strings”. And indeed, many are the companies involvedin the race to get the TLDS.Google, Microsoft, Apple, Sony, Samsung, and Amazon, are among the popular brands that first run to secure their domain extensions. ICANN also revealed companies such as Nokia, Netflix, Oracle, Yahoo, Cisco.
There are also other companies that are fighting not to possess their owns. Instead, they are chasing to sign a contract with the new owners, so as to run and manage their TLDs, just the way Verisign manages the .com domain.
Brands are fighting for new extensions
Google is still now, the most aggressivecompany in applying for 101 TLDs. Not only Google purchased .google, but it also bought up .android,.lol, .wow, .vip, .chrome, .cloud.
Amazon is also willing to grabmany applications (30 on the whole) beyond its own brand, such as: .book, .fire, .free, .music. A few weeks ago, it paid $10 million to get .book domain ownership, allowing it to sell names with the .book suffix.
Microsoft is also in the race. The firm of Redmond applied for TLDs that cover many of itsbrands: .Azure, .skydrive, .hotmail, and .skype.
By the way, Symantec that owns the antivirus Norton antivirus suitesalso applied for some new extensions:“.protection”,“.antivirus” and “.cloud”.
Apple Company surprisingly applied only of .apple
What about .sex, .porn, .sucks domains?
They are definitely among the eyebrow-raising domains. Hopefully, ICANN said it will pay critical attention to those TLDs, to ensure that companies’ brands will not be improperly used under those TDLs. ICANN also said that it has the right to take a domain back if the owner abuse it.
TLDs are available for everyone
Tech companies are not the only one getting the “strings”. Cities are also getting them. For instance, London got .london, Paris already owns .paris, and Alsace applied for .alsace and so on.
Moreover, companies such as American Express, Wal-Mart, AllState, and Johnson&Johnson have also all applied for multiple domains. Each of them isAmerican consumer brands.
